Light a New Fire: A Fire-Making Workshop for the New Year

Light a New Fire for the New Year.
Join us for a hands-on fire-making workshop rooted in ancestral knowledge and seasonal renewal.

You’ll learn multiple fire-starting techniques—from hand drill and flint & steel to solar, magnesium, and other modern survival methods. Along the way, we’ll explore how fire has connected humans to nature, tradition, and transformation across millennia.

In both Mesoamerican and Celtic traditions, fire was a sacred force that marked new beginnings, honored seasonal change, and gathered people together in the darkest time of year. The New Year was often kindled with flame.

In this afternoon workshop, we’ll:

  • Practice friction and spark-based fire techniques

  • Learn how to select, prepare, and care for your materials

  • Discuss the symbolic role of fire across cultures

  • Offer a written intention to the flames, welcoming the light of a new year

Whether you're new to fire-making or returning to refine your skills, this workshop offers a powerful way to connect with the land, the season, and yourself.
